Privacy Policy
Overview
Litlang (“the app”) helps beginners practice short Mandarin phrases by listening and speaking. This policy describes what information the app handles, how practice audio is processed, and what stays on your device.
There is no signup-required account, advertising, or analytics SDK in the app. Optional Premium subscriptions are processed by Apple, Google, or Stripe depending on where you subscribe.
Information on your device
The app stores the following locally on your device:
- Your optional learning-goal answer
- Which lessons you have completed
- Your playback-speed preference
- An anonymous learner identifier used for daily speaking limits and purchase restore
You can clear this progress from Settings. Temporary recording files created during a Speak attempt are deleted after each attempt.
Microphone and practice audio
The microphone is used only after you tap Speak. Each attempt records up to 12 seconds of audio so the app can check whether your speech matches the lesson phrase.
The clip is sent securely to our practice server, which forwards it to OpenAI’s speech-to-text API to obtain a written transcript. The server then compares that transcript with the lesson’s accepted phrases and returns a match result and fixed feedback. The check does not grade tones or pronunciation quality.
Our practice server keeps attempt audio in memory only for that request. It does not save recordings or transcripts to disk, and it does not write audio or transcript contents to application logs.
Lesson audio (text-to-speech)
Model phrases and spoken replies are generated with OpenAI text-to-speech through the practice server. Playback requires a network connection to that server. Synthesized lesson clips may be cached on the server for reuse; those caches are derived from authored lesson text, not from your recordings.
OpenAI processing
Practice audio and lesson text-to-speech requests are processed by OpenAI under OpenAI’s API data policies. As of the date above, OpenAI states that API data is not used to train its models by default and may be retained for a limited time (up to 30 days) for abuse monitoring. You should review OpenAI’s current terms and privacy documentation for the latest details:
Premium subscriptions
Free use includes unlimited listening and a limited number of speaking checks per day. Premium unlocks unlimited speaking feedback. On iOS and Android, purchases go through Apple or Google. On the website, purchases go through Stripe. We store subscription status and daily usage counts on our practice server, linked to your anonymous learner id (and, for website purchases, the email you provide at checkout for restore).
What we do not collect
- No user accounts or profiles
- No advertising identifiers or ad networks
- No analytics SDKs in the MVP
- No persistent archive of your practice recordings or transcripts on our practice server
Children
The app is intended for general language learning. It does not knowingly collect personal information from children for accounts or marketing. If you believe a child has provided information that should be removed, contact us using the email below.
Changes
We may update this policy when the product’s data handling changes. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of the app after an update means you accept the revised policy.
